A Memory System of Music

"All my ducklings". Such a sheet of music often is a stumpling block for the free play from memory.
It gets the cherished crutch without which you want to walk a single step, even if the bones are long healing again. Therefore, we transform this sheet in this visual memory system of music:

Both systems deliver us from the slavery of sheet music and encourage us in addition to experiment with the melody, the harmonies and rhythm patterns.
And, incidentally, the systems help us to memorize the other five songs of this first volume of the e-books and help us playing them by heart.
How this works?
With just a few rules.

Is it worth the effort at all? Of course will we need time to" rewrite" our sheets of music in our memory technique of music. Unless you let me continue this work and you will buy the planned next volumes of this e-book.
But even if you want to transform your special favorite hits by using this memory technique of music by yourself, the effort will be worth the same in many respects.
The most important aim of course is, that we finally "have in mind" the bar elements of different songs. In a very playfully manner - in the truest sense of the word: Learning (by heart) by doing, (by playing the piano). Therefore, after we have converted our song in this colorful rectangles, we from than on should use only these templates, when we sit down at the piano, when we strap on our accordion or pick up our guitar.
It will be quite helpful, to find a little story or/and a picture for every element of our memory technique of music.
For example: Regarding the first element of the song "We are the Champions" I see fans waving white-red colored flags, the audience thus celebrating her winners, those winners, who are lined up in the next element on the purple diagonal as the gold, silver and bronze medalist of Olympic Games. In the third element with the text passage "my friend" I recognize a waterbed on which two gays loll, one perhaps with a black mustache, like Freddy himself.
And so on ...
You will have noticed: Such "light and sweet" stories are not everyone´s cup of tea. And if I would continue telling you my own story about these bar elements, I were in danger, to kill your own stories, which you undoubtedly will find.
These stories and pictures - in addition to the colored elements, that all are just "anchored", are linked, to the respective text parts of the song, will make it three times easier to convert them in our brain into the tones and harmonies of our songs and let them flow in our hands and from there to our instrument.
But until then, you have an invaluable advantage of this memory technique of music. Because both, the slavish playing notes from the sheet of music and the helpless searching of the melodies and harmonies on the strings or the piano keys now will be a thing of the past.
What's more, this memory technique, in contrast to the sheets of music, grants some liberties concerning the used accompaniment patterns and the variations of the melody and the harmonies. These liberties seems to free our brains, so we get more and more courage to try out other variations and to play our songs according to our current mood.
What not so easily will happen, thank goodness, is finally set to a latest version of the songs, as is the case with sight-reading or learning by heart from sheets of music.

Some words to the "degrees of freedom":

  • Voicing: Do we play the melody monophonic or polyphonic? Will we play the triad material with the left or together with the melody with the right hand?
  • Accompaniment pattern: Will we play the song as a folk song or in the rhythm of a certain dance, or as a rock or pop song?
  • Harmonization: For each triad there exist another triad who can replace it. We should try this out.
  • Each triad can be changed by additional tones (to the sevenths, to the ninths or to the elevenths of the triad. The third of a triad can be replaced by the fourth ...
This seventh we have just met in a chapter before. However, any other "natural" tone may occur here as the fourth tone of a triad. But we even can blow up such triads to buildings with five, six or more tones.
Perhaps the natural border for such harmonies is given by the ten fingers: - a harmony with ten tones. But Mozart should have composed a piece that leads with the help of the nose of the pianist to a harmony with eleven tones.
With these new harmonies a melody can completely sound "new", as well as "strange" - and sometimes even "to strange".
Anyway! Our memory technique of music increases the likelihood significantly, that we dare to make such "experiments".
On a sheet of music we often do not see the forest for the trees: The notes throw a smokescreen over the less gifted musicians brain, and so over his view on the structure of the piece of music. But only those who know these structures can change them and can extrapolate them meaningfully.
And just this is, what we now can manage - with the help of our memory technique of music.
We now are "initiates", spread our wings and leave behind our status of a things repeating parrot-fashion living. ;-). And this in a so much safer and easier manner than with our sheets of music.
